- Intervenes effectively with safe comprehensive nursing care
based on pathophysiologic processes and nursing observations of the
critically ill child.
- Provides highly skilled care to the critically ill child by
monitoring and assessing physiologic variables and administers
appropriate interventions for positive outcomes.
- Initiates and completes patient admission history and
assessment according to established guidelines.
- Performs a systematic pediatric assessment.
- Assesses patient's psychosocial needs and behaviors relating to
current situation and develops individualized plan of care for each
patient. Revise plans as needed.
- Observes symptoms or changes in patient status and responds
promptly, exercising reasonable judgment.
- Explains the rationale for selected therapies based on
observation and findings.
- Evaluate the patient's response to the therapeutic
regimen.
- Administers blood and blood product according to the hospital
standards.
- Correctly obtain and interprets blood gas values.
- Participates in the resuscitation of the patient.
- Initiates and maintain IV therapy. Administers fluids and
electrolytes based on lab values.
- Monitors children on mechanical ventilation and trouble shoots
equipment if needed. Sets up hemodynamic monitoring equipment.
Maintains the arterial line. Calibrates hemodynamic monitoring
equipment for accuracy.
- Demonstrates collaborative practice through effective
communication with the multidisciplinary team.
- Reports significant condition which might impact patient safety
and work habits.
- Observes, follows, and enforces infection control
protocols.
- Describes the actions, uses, dosages, side effects, and nursing
responsibilities associated with administration of specific
medications.
- Records data reflecting pertinent trends in the child's
condition according to the hospital's standards and practices.
- Initiates, evaluates, and documents parental teaching based on
identified learning needs.
- Take charge of the NICU when necessary.
- Ensures a safe and secure environment free of hazards to reduce
the risk of injury to all customers. (Patients, visitors and
staff).
- Conducts risk assessments to reduce adverse events.
- Ensures that safety management issues are appropriately
addressed.
- Effectively utilizes the electronic as well as the paper
medical record.Minimum Qualifications
- A valid New York State license and current registration to
practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State;
and
- Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and
current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the
American Heart Association (AHA).Special NoteFor assignments in
Post-Acute Care ONLY, individuals meeting the following criteria
may also be considered for appointment: Graduation from a nursing
education program registered by the New York State Education
Department (NYSED) as licensure qualifying for Registered
Professional Nurse (RN) and has applied for licensure as an RN.
These unlicensed individuals may be employed to practice under the
immediate and personal supervision of a NYS licensed, currently
registered, RN for up to 90 days immediately following graduation
pending receipt of a limited permit, which selected candidates must
apply for and receive within the same 90-day period. Once a limited
permit is received, individuals can practice nursing, under the
immediate and personal supervision of a NYS licensed, currently
registered, RN at a NYC Health + Hospitals health care setting for
up to one (1) year from the date of issuance of the limited permit.
In addition, must hold or obtain through facility orientation, a
valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through
